When shopping for bed sheets it can be difficult to make the right choice. With so many options for materials, ., one can easily get lost. Here at Nordic Paradise, we exclusively sell bed sheets made from cotton sateen with 300 thread count. We believe this is the best option for you and we are here to explain in detail what each of term means and the benefits it brings you.
What is Sateen?
Sateen is one of the two most popular textiles used for sheets – the other one being percale. It refers not only to the materials used for the product but also to the weave, in which it is woven. Sateen sheets have a looser weave that makes them silkier. They are known for being warm and cozy, soft and durable. Sateen sheets have a slight sheen that gets more subtle after continuous washing. Speaking of washing, since sateen sheets are made of cotton, they are very easy to take care of, like most of your cotton clothes. Furthermore, they are slightly heavier and less prone to wrinkles.
Sateen can sometimes be mistaken for Satin. They are woven the same way but are made of different materials. Sateen is made of cotton, while satin is made of silk or a synthetic alternative such as polyester or nylon. Cotton is soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic. Satin is much shinier and less durable and that’s why it is not recommended for bedding products.
What is the Sateen Weave?
As mentioned several times already, one of the unique characteristics of sateen is its weave. It is woven with three or more threads over and one under. In comparison, the traditional weave is one thread over and one under. It gives it the loose silky feel while also making it heavier so it is warmer and more resistant to wrinkles. The sateen fabric, made from 100% cotton, is loomed from yarns. This thicker yarn and unique weave are the reasons behind the special properties of sateen bed sheets.
The Benefits of Cotton.
Only 100% cotton is used in all of our bed sheets. Cotton is an incredible natural product that has a wide range of benefits. It is hypoallergenic, odor-resistant, and breathable. It is naturally durable and easy to maintain. These are some of the main reasons why it is a perfect material for your bedding. They are also the reason why 100% pure cotton is the most popular bedding fabric on the market, despite the plethora of other alternatives. It is the go-to choice for a luxury, softness, and durability.
Of course, everything has its downsides. If not properly taken care of, cotton is You might have experienced that with your cotton clothes. Also, what makes cotton greatly breathable is also what makes it very absorbent of water, meaning that it can take longer to dry after being washed. However, when weighing the benefits and drawbacks of cotton, it is clear that it is still the best choice for your bedding.
What is a “Thread Count”?
The thread count of sheets refers to the number of strands of fabric per square inch of fabric. This is done by counting these threads and essentially refers to how tightly woven it is. While thread counts give you a general idea of the fabric and its quality it is far from the only or the most important factor or point of consideration. It has been heavily used as a marketing trick, implying that a higher thread count equals higher quality. While it does have some truth to it, it is not the whole picture and should not be your main focus.
Thread counts of 200 to 600 are used for most styles and produce the best results. While higher thread counts might be an indication of higher quality, it quickly makes the product more expensive with diminishing returns in quality. A much higher thread count will usually only change the price tag or worse- make the sheets heavier and less breathable.
